Според говорител на компанията, хакерите са добили достъп до един от сървърите ѝ след което са инжектирали скрипт, който е прихванал информацията от кредитните карти на потребителите. Това е ставало докато потребителя въвежда данните си във формуляра за плащане. Скриптът е прихващал информацията преди тя да бъде криптирана. Това означава, че тези които са плащали през PayPal не са били засегнати.
Междувременно продължава разследването за откриване на извършителя на пробива, но засега все още не е ясно дали и други системи са били уязвими на подобна атака. Очаква се цялата информация от разследването да бъде публикувана след неговото завършване.
